Dental Implants

A dental implant is the replacement of a tooth’s root that is not visible once surgically placed. Like a root, an implant is secured within the jawbone at the tooth’s socket to allow for the support of a replacement tooth, a bridge or full dentures. The practice of implant dentistry is as much about art and planning as it is about science and oral surgery.

The doctors and the team or oral healthcare professionals at Bronxville Dentistry, located near you in educates their patients, current and new, on the options available for the implant-supported replacement of a tooth or several teeth.

There are three options for implant-supported replacements, and each option is described below.

  • Single-Tooth Replacement

After an implant is placed in the tooth’s socket and secured in the jawbone, an abutment is attached to the implant. This abutment is above the gumline to hold the crown (the replacement tooth) in place. Crowns are customized specific to the patient’s mouth and will match the existing teeth. This replacement option is permanent and the crown cannot be removed.

  • Multiple-Tooth Replacement

When two or more contiguous teeth need to be replaced, an implant is surgically placed into the sockets of the missing teeth at each end of the gap. Unlike a single-tooth replacement, there is not the need for an implant in each socket. Abutments are attached to the implants to support the bridge containing the crowns to replace the missing teeth. This replacement option is permanent and the bridge cannot be removed.

  • Removable Implant-Supported Replacement

If all of the upper or the lower teeth are missing, then 2-6 implants will be surgically placed in some of the sockets, properly spaced, of the missing teeth. There is not the need for an implant in each socket. This procedure for removable dentures is used to replace teeth when significant gum tissue and bone loss is present.

Implant-supported dentures also provide support for the lips, the cheeks and the facial skeleton.

The type and placement of the attachments for the dentures can vary as the design relates to the patient’s bone density and the number of implants needed to support the dentures.
